Johannesburg-born Gerald Ntabiso Mukwebu, better known as BISO SPORTS, has risen from street football games to national radio, becoming one of South Africa’s most promising and research-driven sportscasters.

Inspired by football icons like Ronaldinho, Zidane, and David Beckham, Biso fell in love with the game early, later drawing broadcasting inspiration from names such as Robert Marawa, Andile Ncube, and Carol Tshabalala. “Ronaldinho made me fall in love with football completely, while Usain Bolt taught me the importance of self-belief,” he recalls.

At Queens High School, Biso excelled as a scholar and athlete, earning Half Colours for academics, Full Colours for athletics, and recognition as Athlete of the Year. He later studied Chemical Engineering at Wits University and competed at varsity level, even racing against Olympic sprinter Akani Simbine, an experience that taught him the value of pushing beyond limits.

After leaving Wits due to personal challenges, he turned to the arts. His music reached the Top 5 of the KFC Soundbite Chart, and he landed a national Cell C advert alongside Thembsie Matu and Welile Nzuza. In 2022, he represented South Africa at the IMTA Talent Convention in New York, an experience that reignited his passion for sport and sparked his broadcasting journey.

Back in South Africa, Biso shadowed Andile Ncube at Metro FM. What was meant to be a one-week experience grew into a long-term role, where he managed social media, edited video content, and helped grow the show’s following to over 300,000 fans. His role expanded to on-air contributions as a football analyst and sports researcher, covering tournaments from AFCON to the Olympics. His detailed, statistic-driven style earned him the nickname “Biso Stats” among listeners.

Beyond radio, Biso runs his own podcast, First 11 Sports, on YouTube, where he brings fresh voices into the sports conversation and delivers his own bulletins packed with stats, insights, and analysis. “I want fans to leave with information they can carry into their own debates, backed by facts,” he explains.

Looking ahead, Biso’s ambitions are global. “The FIFA World Cup is the ultimate dream. I’d also love to broadcast the Olympics, AFCON, and the major European leagues,” he says. His advice to aspiring sportscasters is clear: “Research. Stay informed. Believe in yourself. Knock on every door, even the biggest ones—you never know which one will open.”
