Joliet, IL — In true rock and roll fashion, Joliet just turned up the volume, visually and culturally.
In a moment that blended music history, roadside Americana, and pure showmanship, the Illinois Rock and Roll Museum on Route 66 officially unveiled its most striking symbol yet: Gigantar, a jaw-dropping, larger-than-life guitar sculpture that now towers over downtown Joliet, glowing with electric energy and rock nostalgia.
The man behind the mission, Ron Romero, Chairman of the Museum, has spent years preparing the venue for its grand debut. But something was missing.
“We needed a sign, something iconic, something unforgettable,” said Romero. “Not only did we have to work with the city and historic committees, we're a historic landmark after all, but we also had to request special permission. Gigantar is bigger than any sign or sculpture currently allowed under city codes!”
Bigger is better when you're making history. And Route 66 is no stranger to unforgettable roadside attractions. From giant hotdogs to massive muffler men, the iconic highway is a shrine to the quirky and extraordinary. With that in mind, Romero and his team knew they needed a showstopper. That’s when artist Shannon McDonald stepped in, designing a colossal guitar worthy of the legends honored inside the museum.
But getting Gigantar from New Jersey to Joliet wasn’t easy, it was an event all its own. Transported by truck across hundreds of miles of America’s heartland, the sculpture sparked spontaneous mini-celebrations at every pit stop.
“Every time we stopped, people came out to see it,” said Andy Carey, who helped with the journey. “Each landmark along Route 66 lit up with excitement, people were expecting us. It was like traveling with a rock star.”
Once installed, the excitement only grew. Crowds gathered as anticipation built for the lighting ceremony. Fans, families, and rock aficionados lined the street, buzzing with energy. Then came the countdown.
Rock legend Rick Nielsen of Cheap Trick hit the oversized switch, designed as a giant amplifier, and Joliet lit up. Gigantar beamed to life, illuminating the city skyline in spectacular fashion as cheers echoed through the night.
“This moment represents more than a sign,” said Romero. “It’s a tribute to the power of music, the soul of Route 66, and the magic of dreaming big. So many people made this possible, and I’m incredibly thankful.”
With Gigantar now standing tall, the countdown is officially on for the grand opening of the Illinois Rock and Roll Museum on Route 66. The museum promises an immersive journey through Illinois’ legendary contributions to the world of music, with exhibits honoring iconic artists, unforgettable performances, and the cultural power of rock and roll.
Whether you're a die-hard fan or a curious traveler cruising the Mother Road, one thing’s certain: Joliet is now home to a new landmark that demands your attention.
